Produced between 1977 and 1998, the aircraft's official name is the M20J, but it was marketed as the 201 to highlight its top speed of 201 mph (miles per hour). It was the first airplane to exceed 200 mph with an engine producing 200 hp.
201 is, to the surprise of many, the work of the late LeRoy LoPresti. LoPresti had extensive aeronautical experience, including a stint in the Apollo lunar program at Grumman. He became almost a legend for his ability to get the best out of an airplane through aerodynamic refinements, which he had successfully done on the Grumman Tiger.
